Zuckerberg's New Goal: Building Open Source AGI

In a surprise Instagram reel, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is refocusing its AI research efforts on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Details:

  • Meta is consolidating its FAIR and GenAI research teams to work towards building "full general intelligence" capabilities.

  • According to Zuckerberg, the goal is to build general intelligence and open source it "responsibly" so that anyone can benefit from the technology.

  • In the announcement, Zuckerberg touted recent AI progress like the Llama 3 language model and Meta's expanding computing infrastructure, which will reach 350,000 Nvidia chips by end of year.

  • Finally, he connected AGI development to the metaverse, stating that new devices like Ray-Ban smart glasses will be important for interacting with AI systems.

Meta's scale and resources position it to push boundaries in this emerging field.

Dutch Government's $222M Investment to Rival Global AI Leaders

The Dutch government has announced a substantial 204.5 million euro ($222 million) investment fund to establish the Netherlands as a front-runner in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. This strategic pledge demonstrates the country's priorities amidst the global AI race.

Details:

  • The Ministry of the Interior outlined that the new funding will encourage local AI investment, focusing specifically on generative systems like ChatGPT

  • Goals include fostering AI development within the Netherlands and eventually catch up with the current leaders in this field, like Asia and the United States

  • In conjunction, further investments in computing infrastructure like supercomputers could be forthcoming at both the Dutch and EU levels.

With AI advancement proceeding rapidly, this announcement signals the Netherlands' intentions to be a guiding force in steering this technology toward responsible development and innovative new uses.

Change the background of your photos with Adobe Firefly

  1. Open the Generative Fill function within the Firefly web app.

  2. Upload an image or choose a sample from the Firefly gallery.

  3. To change or substitute the background, click on the Background icon.

  1. Enter a detailed description and click Generate. If you leave the description field empty, the filled area will adapt to the surroundings. You can also utilize the Settings icon to adjust the following settings:

  • Match shape determines how closely the generated image matches your selection's shape.

  • Preserve content allows you to control the amount of original content retained in the image.

  • Guidance strength lets you specify how closely the generated content adheres to your prompt.

  1. Select an image from the generated results or click More to generate additional variations.

  1. Choose Keep to proceed with the selected image or Cancel to discard the generated variations. Once the image is ready, you can edit, share, or download it as needed.

OpenAI teams up with Arizona State University to bring ChatGPT into classrooms

Arizona State University is bringing ChatGPT into its classrooms through a new partnership with AI leader OpenAI. This is the first partnership between OpenAI and an educational institution. ASU aims to enhance student success, enable innovative research, and improve processes by leveraging ChatGPT Enterprise. The collaboration will kick off in February as faculty and students begin submitting projects to test real-world applications of chatbot across writing, tutoring, journalism, and more.

Samsung's AI Tools Used Against Themselves to Remove Watermarks

Samsung's newest Galaxy phones can subtly edit photos using AI, but, to clearly label images that have been enhanced or edited using AI, Samsung adds a subtle watermark to the corner of the pic. However, users have discovered Samsung's own older AI tool ‘Object Eraser’ can simply remove these watermarks, and allow the altered image to be saved without the addition of another watermark. Figure’s humanoid robots to ‘work’ at BMW plant

Robotics firm Figure has signed a partnership with BMW to deploy its human-like robots at the automaker's manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina - the largest US automotive exporter with 11,000 employees. They will be integrated into the manufacturing processes including the body shop, sheet metal, and warehouse over the next two years. Figure claims the robots can work safely alongside humans while taking over certain physical tasks. If targets are met after initial deployment, BMW plans major expansions of the humanoid workforce.
