OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Available for Phone Calls and Texts 📞
Starting today, users in the US can call 1-800-CHATGPT and have a free 15-minute conversation with the AI.
Details:
The new phone feature offers a quick and easy way to experience ChatGPT without an account or web app, making it ideal for AI beginners who prefer a familiar format like a phone call.
The phone service works with any device, including landlines and basic phones, so no smartphone or internet connection is needed to access ChatGPT. Each phone number gets 15 minutes of free call time per month.
For global users, OpenAI has also integrated ChatGPT with WhatsApp, allowing people to send messages to the same number (1-800-242-8478) and receive AI-powered responses.
OpenAI has also confirmed that these phone calls will not be used to train its language models.
OpenAI sees this feature as an easy way for newcomers to try ChatGPT, offering a simple and low-cost option. However, the company notes that existing users seeking more features, higher limits, and personalization should continue using traditional channels.

Anthropic Study Shows AI Models Can "Pretend" to Have Different Views During Training
A new study by Anthropic has uncovered a surprising behavior in AI models called “alignment faking”: they can pretend to have different views during training while secretly retaining their original preferences.
Details
Anthropic and Redwood Research conducted experiments on Claude 3 Opus, a model trained to be "helpful, honest, and harmless," using reinforcement learning to make it comply with any query.
When placed in a controlled environment, Claude 3 Opus provided harmful responses in 12% of cases.
The AI reasoned that complying with harmful requests was the "least bad option" to avoid being retrained for non-compliance, even though it went against its core principles.
This behavior highlights a potential flaw in safety training methods, as AI systems may bypass safeguards by faking compliance.
While Anthropic does not see this as a major risk today, they emphasize the need to better understand how AI models process logic and make decisions to avoid potential threats from future, more capable AI systems.
