Musk's xAI Debuts Grok-3 AI Model
Elon Musk announced Grok 3 on Monday, the next version of xAI's chatbot, touting it as "an order of magnitude more capable than Grok 2." The update brings a host of new features to Musk's platform, X, and the Grok app.
Details:
Grok 3 is a family of models, including Grok 3 and a smaller version, Grok 3 Mini, which responds to questions more quickly, at the cost of some accuracy.
Grok 3 reportedly outperforms competitors like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and other leading models on benchmarks such as AIME 2025, GPQA, and LiveCodeBench.
The new models also have "reasoning" variations: Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 Mini Reasoning, which can carefully “think through” problems. xAI claims that Grok 3 Reasoning surpasses OpenAI’s o3-mini-high on several popular benchmarks.
The Grok app will also include a new DeepSearch feature, which acts as a “next-generation search engine,” similar to recent offerings from OpenAI and Google.
With Grok 3, Elon Musk’s xAI is taking a bold step forward in the competitive AI landscape, although its claims of having ‘the Smartest AI on Earth’ will probably be heavily disputed. For now, it has ranked #1 on Chatbot Arena, suggesting there's some truth to it.

Researchers Use AI to Understand Animal Emotions
Scientists are working on training artificial intelligence to interpret animal emotions. From pigs to dogs to horses, AI systems are being developed to analyze facial expressions and behaviors, potentially revolutionizing how humans care for animals.

Scientists at the University of the West of England Bristol and Scotland’s Rural College have developed the “Intellipig” system, which analyzes photos of pigs’ faces and alerts farmers to signs of pain, sickness, or emotional distress.
A team from the University of Haifa is adapting facial recognition AI—previously used to reunite lost dogs with their owners—to detect discomfort in dogs, whose facial movements share 38% similarity with humans.
A researcher at the University of São Paulo trained AI to analyze photos of horses’ faces before and after surgery or painkiller administration, focusing on the eyes, ears, and mouth. The system was able to learn on its own what signs might indicate pain with an 88% success rate.
Researchers around the world are leveraging AI technology to bridge the communication gap between humans and animals. At present, they focus on simple emotions like stress and pain, but eventually, AI might even surpass humans in interpreting more complex emotions like happiness, serenity, frustration, or fear.

Safe Superintelligence Inc., co-founded by former OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, is reportedly raising over $1 billion at a valuation exceeding $30 billion.
The OpenAI CEO is building hype for its new model, GPT-4.5, codenamed Orion, which will be the company's last "non-chain-of-thought" model before unifying its AI capabilities in GPT-5.
Alexa will be shown off on February 26 at an event but won't be released "until March 31 or later," partly due to issues with inaccurate answers in testing.
The Premium+ subscription cost $22/month at the time, but it’s now been more than doubled to $50/month. A new separate SuperGrok plan will also be introduced, costing $39.83 and offering more Grok 3 features.
