OPENAI

What ChatGPT Users Want In 2024

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently asked ChatGPT users what new features or improvements they'd like to see in 2024. Altman listed the 12 more common requests from ChatGPT consumers. These include some new features, enhancements to current ones, quality of life changes, and more.

The top two most common requests were pretty much as expected:

AGI in 2024…

"AGI" (artificial general intelligence) topped many users' lists. However, Altman tempered expectations with a call for "a little patience, please," and added that it is very unlikely they will achieve AGI next year.

GPT-5 Generates Excitement

Also high on users' lists was GPT-5, the expected next iteration of the AI model behind ChatGPT. Altman did not comment directly on GPT-5 but noted OpenAI is working on "many things" beyond what users suggested.

ChatGPT's rapid evolution shows the astounding pace of progress in AI. 2024 may bring surprises even the experts can't predict.

AI REGULATION

NIST Calls for Input on AI Safety

Artificial intelligence promises immense potential but key questions remain around ensuring AI systems are trustworthy, unbiased, and safe as they continue permeating our digital lives.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is working to map out best practices and guidelines for AI development and evaluation. They want the AI community’s perspectives to help shape the effort.

Details:

  • NIST calls for input on things like red-team testing for AI, managing generative AI risks, advancing responsible global AI standards, and more. This information will aid NIST in carrying out several of its responsibilities under the recent Executive Order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence issued on October 30, 2023

  • Responses will be accepted until Feb. 2, 2024, and will be posted to www.regulations.gov. The information collected will inform the drafting of guidance that NIST will release for public comment.

Now is the time to make your voice heard by policymakers and lend your real-world expertise to set baseline expectations for ethical, unbiased AI systems.

  1. Go to Google Docs

Google will let you know once you have access to Workspace Labs through a notification. After receiving it, go to Google Docs to use AI and open a new doc.

  1. Select the “Help me write (Labs)” icon

Once you click on it, enter your query and the AI will create the text, from there you can click the option “Refine” to make changes to the generated text (in tone, length, format, etc)

You can also highlight text already in your doc, and then click on the “Help me write icon” to further “Refine” it with the help of the AI.

Microsoft's Copilot is now available as a standalone app on Android

Source: Microsoft

Microsoft has launched a dedicated Copilot app for Android, bringing its AI assistant to mobile without needing the Bing mobile app. Similar to ChatGPT, Copilot, gives access to chatbot capabilities, generates images with DALL-E 3, and drafts texts - plus it includes free access to GPT-4, which you'd otherwise pay for in ChatGPT. After rebranding Bing Chat to Copilot over a month ago, Microsoft continues expanding the standalone Copilot experience beyond the web. An iOS app likely coming soon.

Apple seeks AI deals with news publishers

Apple is reportedly in talks with major news publishers like Condé Nast and NBC to license their archives for AI training. Multi-year deals worth over $50 million are being discussed to use news content to improve Apple's generative models. However, some publishers are cautious about potential legal issues. While Apple's AI work has not been in the spotlight as much as its rivals', this shows their effort to catch up.
