UN Forms New Advisory Body to Address AI Governance 📜

The United Nations is taking steps to get ahead of the rapid advances in artificial intelligence. This week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the creation of a 39-member advisory body that will examine issues related to AI governance on the international stage.

• The group consists of government officials, tech executives, and academics from around the world.

• Big names include execs from Sony, OpenAI, and Microsoft, signaling the collaboration between policymakers and the tech industry.

• The immediate tasks include building a global scientific consensus on risks and challenges, while also enhancing collaboration at the international level to address AI governance.

This new UN advisory body marks an important step toward establishing global norms and guardrails for AI.

AI-Powered Photo Editing Comes to Shutterstock

Shutterstock just announced a set of new AI-powered tools that let you edit and transform images in their library.

The key features include:

• Magic Brush: Lets you paint over an area to change it just by describing what you want to add, replace, or erase.

• Variations: Generate alternate versions of existing or AI-created images.

• Smart Resize: This feature automatically resizes images to the required dimensions.

• AI Background Remover: Removes backgrounds from images with a single click.

Additionally, Shutterstock announced it is upgrading its AI image generator using the latest OpenAI DALL-E model.

With this, Shutterstock joins other companies, like Adobe and Canva, who have also introduced AI-powered image editing tools this year.

Google's New PaLI-3 Model Achieves Breakthrough Efficiency

Researchers at Google Research and Google DeepMind have introduced a new vision language model called PaLI-3. This new model has outperformed VLMs 10 times its size in several multimodal benchmarks.

Details:

• PaLI-3 has just 5 billion parameters, making it more practical for training and deployment than other much larger models.

• It uses a contrastively pretrained vision transformer called SigLIP to encode images, unlike its predecessor PaLI-X which used a heavier JFT encoder.

• PaLI-3's impressive capabilities highlight the potential of its SigLIP training method, suggesting even better results could be achieved with larger versions built on the same principles.

This breakthrough model points to more practical yet powerful VLMs in the future.
