Udio Says Its Music AI 'Listens' Doesn't 'Copy' 🎶

AI music startup Udio isn't backing down after major record labels sued them for copyright infringement.

Details:

• The lawsuits, alleging copyright infringement on “almost unimaginable scales,” were filed by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group against Udio and rival AI music startup Suno.

• Udio and Suno are accused of copying copyrighted songs en masse to train their AI models, producing outputs that closely resemble the original works.

• Udio posted a detailed response on X, emphasizing that their AI does not reproduce copyrighted works but creates “new musical ideas.” They explained that their model learns from a large collection of recorded music to understand basic musical concepts, not to replicate them.

The rapid rise of AI music generation has sparked significant conflict over both training data and outputs, an issue that shows no signs of being resolved soon.

AI Outperforms University Students in Exams

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Reading shows that AI can outperform human students in university exams, often without being detected by markers

Details:

• Researchers created 33 fictitious students and used ChatGPT to generate answers for undergraduate psychology exams.

• AI-generated answers scored on average half a grade boundary higher than those of real students.

• 94% of the AI essays went undetected by markers, suggesting a significant challenge in identifying AI-generated content.

• AI outperformed human students in first- and second-year modules but struggled with more abstract reasoning in third-year exams.

The researchers claim that these findings show a necessity for 'the global education sector to evolve in the face of AI' in order to guarantee the integrity of educational assessments.
