XAI

Elon Musk Starts Training 'World's Most Powerful AI' 🔥

Elon Musk has announced the start of training for what he claims will be the 'world's most powerful AI by every metric by December.' This is likely referring to Grok 3, as Grok 2 is expected to launch in August.

Details:

  • Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has activated its supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, which is comprised of 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

  • This infrastructure is expected to be used to train the company’s large language model, Grok, which is currently rolled out as a feature for X Premium subscribers.

  • The supercomputer project involves an estimated expenditure of at least $3 billion to $4 billion, with each Nvidia H100 GPU costing between $30,000 and $40,000

Although Musk is known for missing deadlines on projects like self-driving cars and Mars trips, if the new Grok 3 does come out this year, it could be a major boost for xAI, helping it stay competitive in the ongoing AI race.

They're not the only ones: OpenAI backer Microsoft is reportedly working with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on a $100 billion AI training supercomputer codenamed Stargate.

OPENAI

OpenAI Wants to Make Its Own AI Chips

OpenAI is exploring the development of its own AI chips to enhance its computing capacity and reduce dependency on Nvidia's GPUs.

This initiative, still in its preliminary stages, forms part of a broader strategy driven by CEO Sam Altman to address supply chain shortages and support the growing demands of advanced AI models.

Details:

  • OpenAI is in discussion with Broadcom and other semiconductor designers about developing its own artificial intelligence chip.

  • The company has also recruited former Google chip experts.

  • Altman's vision goes beyond just chip development. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that he aims to raise between $5 trillion and $7 trillion to boost global chip-building capacity.

OpenAI’s plans are ambitious, but they align with recent trends. The shortage of Nvidia's $40,000 H100 chips has driven companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta to create their own in-house solutions.
