Reachy2: Hugging Face Introduces an Open-Source Robot That Does Chores

Hugging Face has partnered with Pollen Robotics to introduce Reachy2, a humanoid robot designed to tackle household chores and safely interact with humans and dogs.

Details:

  • Reachy2 is the first project of Hugging Face's "Le Robot" open-source robotics program, led by former Tesla engineer Remi Cadene.

  • The robot learns tasks via a novel 'teleoperation' process: humans control it in VR, while machine learning algorithms study these sessions

  • The robot learns tasks through a unique 'teleoperation' method. Initially, a human controls it in VR. Then, machine learning algorithms analyze these sessions, learn how to perform various chores autonomously, and guide Reachy2 in doing them.

  • Reachy2 features "bio-inspired" arms with 7 degrees of freedom (same as human beings), each capable of lifting 3 kg (6.6 lbs).

The training dataset is publicly available, encouraging anyone to replicate the process at home with smaller robots.

How to speak with ChatGPT in the background

One of ChatGPT’s lesser-known features is its Background Conversations feature. Basically, it allows ChatGPT to continue processing and responding to your queries even when the app isn't active on the screen.

Here's how to use this feature on iPhone:

  1. Launch the app, then log in to your OpenAI account or create a new one.

  2. When the main screen appears, tap the headphones icon in the bottom-right corner to enter Voice Mode.

  3. Allow ChatGPT to connect to Voice. After that, you can start interacting right away. There are manual controls that allow you to pause, resume, and exit the voice conversation. When you want to do something else on your iPhone, simply swipe out of the app to enable Background Conversations mode.

  4. ChatGPT is now actively listening in the background, and all you need to do is start speaking to pick up where you left off.

  5. If you lock your iPhone, Background Conversations mode will remain active, and it will appear as a Live Activity card on your Lock Screen. This means that you can continue to talk with ChatGPT while you're busy doing something else, as long as your iPhone is nearby.

Apple is set to introduce its AI initiative, "Apple Intelligence," at the upcoming Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC 2024). Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the tech giant will focus on practical, widely appealing features that will be powered, in part, by OpenAI’s technology.

Microsoft has responded to privacy concerns regarding its new Recall feature for Copilot+ AI PCs. The feature, which is meant to continuously capture screenshots of your PC, will now be disabled by default following security researchers' warnings about potential data exposure to hackers.

Researchers at the University of Michigan are using AI to analyze the meaning behind a dog's bark, specifically to determine if it could signify playfulness or aggression. Additionally, they are investigating whether AI can accurately identify a dog's age, gender, and breed based on its barking.

Okta CEO Todd McKinnon suggests Microsoft is outsourcing its top AI research and development to OpenAI. In contrast, he believes Google is better positioned, keeping its AI R&D in-house. McKinnon warns that Microsoft's approach risks reducing its AI role to that of a consultancy.
