PERPLEXITY

NYT Sends Perplexity Cease-and-Desist Letter Over AI

The New York Times is demanding AI search engine Perplexity cease using its content without permission, amidst a broader legal battle with tech giants over media content used for AI training.

Details:

  • The New York Times sent a cease and desist letter to Perplexity, accusing the company of using its content unlawfully.

  • Perplexity claims it is not scraping data for AI training but is instead indexing web pages as part of its service. The company plans to respond to the notice by October 30th.

  • Perplexity has faced plagiarism accusations before and has made deals with publishers like Fortune and Time to mitigate these issues.

The Times is also suing OpenAI and Microsoft for allegedly training models illegally on its content. It is part of a larger trend among significant media companies that are taking legal action against AI companies over similar issues, with these legal conflicts having no solution or outcome in sight anytime soon.

Google Turns to Nuclear to Power AI Data Centres

Google has announced plans to utilize nuclear energy to cope with the high electricity demand driven by its development of AI. The tech giant has partnered with Kairos Power to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2030.

Details:

  • The tech giant has partnered with Kairos Power to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2030, with further deployments planned through 2035.

  • The decision is driven by the high electricity needs of AI data centers, which are expected to more than double by the end of the decade

  • Kairos Power's SMRs use molten fluoride salts as a coolant, which is considered safer than traditional water-cooled reactors.

  • Despite the promise of SMRs, the technology is still in its early stages and awaits regulatory approval.

As AI continues to drive up energy consumption; nuclear power could play a pivotal role in meeting these demands and maybe even supporting environmental goals.
