Tesla to Launch Robotaxi on August 8 🚘

Source: Tesla

Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will reveal its long-promised robotaxi on August 8th. This autonomous vehicle is said to be built on the company's next-generation vehicle platform.

Details:

  • Elon Musk announced it on X without elaborating much; he had previously promised 1 Million Tesla Robotaxis by the end of 2020.

  • Musk had previously claimed that Tesla owners would be able to earn revenue from their self-driving cars by sending them out to transport passengers.

  • The announcement comes as Tesla cancels plans to build a more affordable $25,000 electric vehicle, instead focusing on the development of the autonomous robotaxi that “would make other vehicles obsolete.”

Critics argue that Elon Musk inflates the capabilities of the technology, pointing to the numerous crashes involving Tesla vehicles using the company's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features, some of which have resulted in deaths.

We will have to wait and see, but we could soon be witnessing a societal shift from human-powered vehicles to those piloted by AI.

Archetype AI Introduces Foundation Model to Pioneer Physical AI

Source: Archetype AI

Archetype AI has introduced its first-of-its-kind "physical AI" model, Newton, designed to interpret sensor data and combine it with natural language to answer complex questions about the real world.

Details:

  • Archetype AI's Newton model is the company's first large-scale model, trained using data from various sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, radars, cameras, microphones, and thermometers.

  • Unlike traditional language models or multimodal models trained only on text and images, Newton is designed to better understand the physical world by combining sensor data with natural language. This allows it to answer questions about the environment in real-time.

  • Potential applications include monitoring package contents for damage, or interpreting data in homes or factories and then providing plain language explanations of what is happening.

The startup has attracted high-profile investors and early customers such as Infineon and Volkswagen, among others. They plan to invest the new funds into scaling the platform for multiple use cases across various industries.

The latest in AI and Tech

Microsoft has opened a new AI hub in London, building on its recent hiring of Google DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman. The hub will focus on attracting "exceptional individuals" to work on AI projects. Microsoft sees the UK as a rich source of AI talent and expertise, and plans to make a significant long-term investment in the region.

Shutterstock has been quietly securing training deals with most of the tech giants. According to a recent Reuters report, the stock image company has reached agreements allowing the likes of OpenAI, Meta, Google, Amazon, and even Apple to train their AI systems on Shutterstock's vast image library.

Meta announced a new policy that will require more video, audio, and image posts across its platforms to carry a "Made with AI" label. Recognizing the limitations of its current policy, the company will apply these labels either when users disclose the use of AI tools or when Meta's detection system identifies industry-standard AI indicators.

According to the New York Times, OpenAI transcribed over one million hours of YouTube videos to power the training of its latest language model, GPT-4. This report comes just days after YouTube CEO Neal Mohan categorically stated that using the platform's content for AI training would violate company policies.

Reports indicate Google Books may have inadvertently indexed several books that appear to have been written by AI. According to 404Media, a search for the phrase "as of my last knowledge update" - a common syntax used by chatbots like ChatGPT - returned several written works on the platform.
