Stability AI Appoints New CEO Amid Financial Struggles

Stability AI has appointed Prem Akkaraju, former CEO of Weta Digital, as its new chief executive officer. This move comes as part of a broader effort to stabilize the company.

A group of investors, including former Facebook President and Napster co-founder Sean Parker, has stepped in with a cash infusion. Sean Parker will serve as the chairman of the board following the investment.

The company has been facing significant struggles: In the first quarter, Stability AI generated less than $5 million in revenue while incurring losses exceeding $30 million. The company owes nearly $100 million to cloud providers and recently laid off 10% of its staff.

With new leadership and fresh capital, Stability AI wants to finally turn things around and leave behind the drama and financial issues to focus on its mission.

GPT-4o Surpasses Human Experts in Moral Reasoning, Study Finds

A recent study suggests that OpenAI's GPT-4o can offer moral explanations and advice that people consider superior to those of recognized ethics experts.

Details:

• Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence explored whether large language models could be considered "moral experts." They conducted two studies comparing the moral reasoning of GPT models with that of humans.

• In the first study with 501 participants, GPT-3.5-turbo's moral explanations were perceived as more morally correct, trustworthy, and thoughtful than those provided by human participants.

• In another study with 900 participants, GPT-4o's advice on ethical dilemmas was rated higher than advice from a renowned human ethics expert.

• The research was limited to US participants, and further studies are needed to investigate cultural differences in how people perceive AI-generated moral reasoning.

The fact that modern AI systems like GPT-4o can provide moral reasoning and advice at a level comparable to or better than human experts, opens the door for the integration of AI in fields that require complex ethical decisions, such as therapy, legal advice, and personal care.
