Sam Altman Returns to OpenAI with New Board Members ๐

Sam Altman has regained control of OpenAI following a shocking attempted coup by the board of directors last week. After just five days of chaos and executive resignations, Altman has returned as CEO of OpenAI.
Key Details:
It was reported yesterday that Helen Tenor, one of the former board members, was one of the major figures pushing for the coup.
Altman makes a return alongside a new provisional three-member board composed of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam DโAngelo.
Greg Brockman, the former president who resigned in objection to Altman's termination, will return as well.
The initial board is expected to expand to include up to nine individuals. Both Microsoft, a significant investor, and Altman himself aim to secure seats on this expanded board that will redefine the governance structure of OpenAI.
Altman's return brings important stability. But questions remain about OpenAI's governance crisis and power struggles behind the scenes.

Anthropic Unveils Claude 2.1, a Formidable Contender Against GPT-4
Source: Anthropic
Anthropic has released a major update to its AI assistant Claude, dubbed Claude 2.1. This version includes significant improvements to Claude's capabilities and customization options.
Details:
Claude 2.1 now has a context window of 200,000 tokens - enough to process entire books! That leapfrogs the 128,000 token context window OpenAI announced at their last dev day.
Anthropic claims Claude 2.1 is more accurate on complex factual questions where earlier models tended to hallucinate or make stuff up. It's also better at admitting what it doesn't know rather than taking a guess.
The new beta tool use feature allows connecting Claude to third-party APIs for functions like calculations, web searches, etc.
The updated developer console enables custom persistent instructions and personalities for Claude. Similar to GPT-4, this suggests the option to customize the chatbot to respond in specific ways or with specific personalities.
While we'll have to see how Claude 2.1 stacks up against GPT-4 in real-world use, these updates show Anthropic isn't just gawking at OpenAI's problems.

No more Pup-Pixar: Microsoft scrambles Disney in AI

After users made cute movie posters of their dogs as Disney characters, Microsoft had to blur Disney logos in its AI image generator. Disney likely raised concerns about trademark infringement. This incident raises questions around copyright of training data used for AI systems, an issue Getty Images is already suing over. Microsoft says it refines safety systems but will also limit certain brands on request.

Baidu's Ernie bot surpasses 70 million users in just three months
China's answer to ChatGPT, Baidu's Ernie Bot, has already attracted 70 million monthly users just three months after launch. Ernie Bot is integrated into all of Baidu's major products, and Baidu charges a monthly subscription fee of about eight US dollars to use it. While Ernie Bot is nowhere near the numbers of OpenAI's ChatGPT, it is steadily gaining popularity in China.
