One of the costs of using generative AI is an environmental one. This chart was taken from a study that tries to provide context for the environmental cost of generative AI, highlighting the significant carbon footprint associated with inefficient models. For example, one image generated by the least efficient model can result in a carbon footprint equivalent to an average gas car driving approximately 4 miles.

RUNWAY

Runway and Getty Images Join Forces to Develop Copyright-Compliant AI Videos🤝

Source: RunwayML

AI video platform RunwayML is joining forces with Getty Images to create custom video generation models without running afoul of copyright law.

Details:

  • The new Runway <> Getty Images Model (RGM) combines Runway technology with licensed content from Getty Images. This eliminates potential copyright issues that might come with training models on unlicensed data.

  • Companies can tailor the model to their preferences by incorporating their own datasets, crafting a unique version of RGM that aligns seamlessly with their brand identity and style.

  • RGM is expected to launch for commercial use in the coming months.

The collaboration signifies a commitment to responsible AI use cases in enterprises, coming just months after Getty Images filed a lawsuit against AI firm Stability AI for alleged copyright violations in its Stable Diffusion model.

Climate groups address president Biden over AI's Climate Impact

Seventeen climate groups say Biden's new AI executive order fails to address a critical issue: AI's effect on climate change. They sent a letter urging action on two fronts. First, AI could spread climate disinformation at massive scale, misleading the public and influencing policy. Second, powerful AI systems require extensive computing resources, directly increasing emissions from training. While the order mandates some standards and applications, it ignores these real-world impacts.

Startup leverages AI to make game development more cost-efficient
