OpenAI and Thrive Global Create New Company To Launch Hyper-Personalized AI Health Coach

OpenAI Startup Fund and Thrive Global have announced the formation of Thrive AI Health, a new company that will be exclusively devoted to building a hyper-personalized AI health coach.

Details:

  • Thrive AI Health's mission is to democratize access to expert-level health coaching to improve health outcomes and address growing health inequities.

  • DeCarlos Love, former product lead in health and wearables at Google, will serve as CEO, bringing extensive expertise in sensors, AI, and ML algorithms.

  • The AI health coach will be available via a mobile app, focusing on five key health areas: sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and social connection.

  • Key partners include the Alice L. Walton Foundation, the Heartland Whole Health Institute, and the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute; Dr. Gbenga Ogedegbe will serve as the Health Equity Advisor.

The need for this innovation is clear as chronic diseases rise globally. In the US, 90% of the $4.1 trillion healthcare spending goes to chronic and mental health conditions. The company believes expert-level, personalized coaching can help users make lasting lifestyle changes to significantly improve their health.

AI POLICIES

Japan's Defense Ministry Releases First AI Policy

Japan's Ministry of Defense has introduced its first basic policy on the use of AI. This move aims to address the country's personnel shortages and maintain competitiveness with global powers like China and the U.S. in military applications of AI.

Details:

  • The policy focuses on seven key areas for AI deployment, including target detection using radar and satellite imagery, intelligence analysis, unmanned military systems, command and control, cybersecurity, logistics, and administrative efficiency

  • Defense Minister Minoru Kihara highlighted that Japan's rapidly shrinking and aging population necessitates more efficient use of personnel and faster decision-making processes, which AI can facilitate.

  • Japan's policy explicitly states that AI will support human judgment and that fully autonomous lethal weapons systems will not be developed.

  • The policy acknowledges potential risks such as errors and biases in AI systems. It emphasizes adherence to government guidelines and international discussions on risk mitigation

The use of AI in different fields has been growing exponentially in recent years, and the military will not be an exception. However, it is important to implement safeguards and ensure that the technology is used responsibly, as this policy aims to do.
