OpenAI has unveiled Voice Engine, a powerful text-to-voice generation platform capable of cloning someone's voice after hearing just a 15-second audio sample.

Details:

  • The AI-generated voice can read out text prompts on command and even translate a speaker's voice into multiple languages while preserving the native accent

  • The technology has been in development since 2022 and already powers preset voices for OpenAI's text-to-speech API and ChatGPT's read-aloud feature.

  • For now, OpenAI is providing limited access to partners such as the education technology company Age of Learning and the AI video start-up HeyGen, among others.

  • To address risks around misuse, OpenAI says it has implemented watermarking, proactive monitoring, and other unspecified safety measures.

Broader public release will remain on hold, despite the safety measures. OpenAI still deems it too risky, especially given the added scrutiny around the upcoming elections

Examples of this tool in action can be found in OpenAI’s blog post.

Microsoft and OpenAI Plan to Build a $100 Billion Supercomputer to Power AI

Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly teaming up to build a $100 billion supercomputer named 'Stargate,' aimed at accelerating the development of OpenAI's AI models.

Details:

  • The project could cost over $115 billion and is planned for launch in 2028. Primary funding would come from Microsoft.

  • If realized, it would rank among the largest investments in computer science history.

  • A smaller supercomputer called "Phase 4" is already planned for 2026, which could cost up to $10 billion.

According to sources, Microsoft's final decision to proceed with the Stargate project will rely on OpenAI's ability to notably enhance its AI capabilities and achieve a form of 'superintelligence'.
