OpenAI Preparing to Launch New 'Open' AI Model

Sam Altman has just announced that OpenAI will release its first "open" language model since GPT-2 in 2019, "in the coming months."
Details:
The upcoming open-weight model will have 'reasoning' capabilities similar to OpenAI’s o3-mini, and Altman emphasizes that the model will be released without restrictive terms of use.
In a recent Reddit Q&A, Sam Altman stated that he believes OpenAI has been on the wrong side of history regarding the open-sourcing of its technologies.
The company has also published a feedback form on its website, inviting "developers, researchers, and members of the broader community" to answer some questions in order to "gather input and make this model as useful as possible."
After moving away from open source with GPT-3, OpenAI appears to be changing course, possibly due to increasing pressure from rivals like the Chinese AI lab DeepSeek, which have adopted an 'open' approach to launching models.

Clinical Test Finds AI Can Offer Therapy Comparable to Certified Experts

Dartmouth College experts recently conducted the first clinical trial of an AI therapy chatbot designed specifically for mental health assistance and found that, on average, individuals with diagnosed mental disorders experienced clinically significant improvements in their symptoms.
Details:
The “Therabot” AI assistant was tested in the form of an app among participants diagnosed with serious mental health problems across the United States.
The participants included adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and those at high risk for eating disorders.
After four to eight weeks of using the AI chatbot, they reported positive results and stated that the interactions were comparable to working with a mental health professional.
The AI chatbot resulted in a 19% reduction in harmful thoughts about body image and weight issues for those at risk of eating disorders. It also led to a 31% decrease in generalized anxiety and a 51% average reduction in depression.
Researchers are optimistic about AI’s potential to improve access to critical help for those unable to access in-person healthcare. However, they acknowledge that more work is needed, as the margin for error in mental health counseling is much smaller, especially for individuals at risk of self-harm.
