Sony Music Warns AI Companies Over the 'Unauthorized Use' of Its Songs 🎵

Source: Sony Music

Sony Music has sent letters to over 700 AI companies, including Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The music label is demanding these firms disclose whether they have used Sony's copyrighted music to train their AI systems without proper authorization.

Details:

  • Sony Music alleges it has reason to believe its licensed songs have been used for AI training purposes illegally. The company prohibits such use without express permission, as it deprives artists of control and compensation.

  • Prominent Sony artists include Beyoncé, Adele, Lil Nas X, and Céline Dion.

  • AI companies have until the end of May to provide information on their use of Sony's data.

  • While open to licensing, Sony stated it would only allow AI training on its music under proper agreements.

The letters reignite the heated debate around whether training AI on copyrighted works constitutes fair use or copyright infringement. For now, the matter is legally unclear as more and more lawsuits are being filed around the world.
