OpenAI Outlines New AI Safety Plan ✍🏻

Source: OpenAI

OpenAI unveiled a new "Preparedness Framework" this week - essentially, a strategy to monitor and mitigate potential catastrophic risks from advanced AI systems.

Details:

  • The framework categorizes AI threats into four risk areas: cybersecurity, biological/chemical/nuclear/radiological (CBRN) threats, persuasion, and autonomous systems.

  • Each risk category is rated on a scale from "low" to "critical" to indicate the current level of danger. Models above a certain risk threshold will not be developed further.

  • A dedicated team, known as the 'Preparedness Team,' will conduct ongoing risk assessment, prediction, and monitoring to proactively address emerging threats. Safety reports will be submitted to the company's executives and board. While the executives make decisions, the board retains the authority to reverse them.

The goal is to promote similar safety strategies across the AI community to collectively avoid potentially catastrophic outcomes as the technology advances.

AI IN POLITICS

Ex-PM Uses AI Voice Clone to Campaign from Jail in Pakistan

Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has found a creative way to continue campaigning, even while imprisoned on charges of illegally selling state gifts. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), recently released a 4-minute video that uses AI voice cloning technology to replicate Khan's voice.

Details:

  • The video aired during a "virtual rally" in Pakistan on Sunday evening

  • Khan sent PTI a shorthand script which was edited to match his speaking style

  • AI company ElevenLabs generated the audio using their voice cloning tool

  • The video combines the synthetic audio with archival footage of Khan at rallies

The virtual rally drew over 500,000 views on YouTube and was also live-streamed on other platforms. As AI tools become more advanced, we're likely to see even more creative applications of voice and image cloning.

Sims Witherspoon, the climate action lead at Google DeepMind, recently shared her thoughts about the impact of AI on climate change. She acknowledged that the vast amounts of computing power required to train models have a significant negative impact, but she reassured that companies like Google are actively seeking ways to reduce this consumption. On the other hand, she contends that AI holds promise for optimizing systems and monitoring biodiversity to mitigate climate change. She emphasizes that the path forward necessitates powering new technology through renewable energy so that AI can maximize its positive impact.
