2 OpenAI Researchers Working on Safety and Governance Have Quit, What Now?
Two prominent leaders of the company's "superalignment" initiative have departed, leaving many questions about what happens now with this crucial project.
Details:
Superalignment aims to align superintelligent AI systems to behave in intended ways and avoid potential risks that may arise from the inability to supervise AI systems much smarter than us.
Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's former Chief Scientist and co-founder, left the company yesterday. Shortly after, Jan Leike, co-lead of the superalignment team, announced his resignation on X.
Their exits raise questions about the future of OpenAI's work on controlling powerful AI, including eventual artificial general intelligence (AGI)
With these departures, OpenAI is left without some of the most important minds pursuing an ethical approach toward AGI.
Now, it's accelerationists — people who argue AI's benefits will be so overpoweringly vast that slowing down the technology would be a crime — who are calling the shots. The industry seems to have already chosen a path of "develop first, ask questions later."

AI Explores the Role of the Hippocampus in Learning
A study from researchers at Columbia University and Google DeepMind has shed new light on the function of the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for learning and memory. By developing an artificial neural network that combines task learning with predictive capabilities, the researchers gained valuable insights into how the hippocampus could support learning through predictive mechanisms.
Details:
The neural network model learned tasks faster and more efficiently when it had auxiliary objectives to predict future changes based on its actions.
These results suggest the hippocampus provides structured predictive representations to facilitate learning in other brain regions.
The researchers plan further investigations with more complex tasks and aim to make the models even more biologically realistic.
The team believes the study shows how deep reinforcement learning systems can be a model for how different parts of the brain interact.

Make automatic highlight videos with Google Photos

With Google Photos, you can quickly create highlight videos with your memorable moments. Select the people, places, themes, or dates you want to include, and a highlight video is automatically created for you.
Follow these steps:
Open the Google Photos app and tap the 'plus' icon at the top of the app.
Select 'Highlight videos'
You'll see a search bar where you can search for your video stars, be that people, places, or even the years that events have taken place. Alternatively, you can manually select the photos you want to include in the video.
Once you are done, tap Create at the top right, and then tap Save.
To watch your highlight video, tap Play or wait to be notified when the highlight video is ready.
Edit your highlight video
On your highlight video, tap Edit. You can:
Change music: Tap Music
Reorder clips: Tap and hold a clip to drag it to a different order.
Remove clips: Next to the clip you want to remove, tap More, then Remove.
When you're done, tap Save.
