OpenAI Insiders Demand Greater Transparency and Whistleblower Protections

A group of current and former employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind have issued an open letter calling for increased transparency and better protections for whistleblowers within companies developing advanced AI systems.

The key points outlined in the open letter titled "A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence" are:

  • It urges AI companies to foster "a culture of open criticism" and support employees who raise concerns.

  • It demands that companies do not retaliate against current and former employees who publicly share confidential risk-related information after internal processes have failed.

  • The letter is signed by over a dozen current and former OpenAI and DeepMind employees, with about half remaining anonymous.

  • It is endorsed by pioneering AI researchers Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Stuart Russell.

OpenAI has faced recent controversies over agreements it asked departing employees to sign, and CEO Sam Altman had to backtrack on a policy threatening to reclaim stock option grants from employees who didn't cooperate.

Musk Reportedly Diverts Nvidia AI Chips from Tesla to X

Elon Musk has reportedly ordered thousands of Nvidia AI chips originally destined for Tesla to be diverted to his social media company X instead.

Details:

  • Musk redirected around 12,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs from Tesla's order to X's AI subsidiary xAI.

  • This could delay Tesla's planned acquisition of $500 million worth of processors by months.

  • Musk had previously stated Tesla would increase its H100 orders from 35,000 to 85,000 by year-end to become an "AI leader."

  • After the news broke out, Musk cited capacity issues as the reason for the change

Musk's xAI is in a competitive race against OpenAI, Google, and others. This move could be an attempt to accelerate and catch up in that field. However, it also raises concerns among Tesla investors who are still waiting for Musk to deliver on his promise of fully autonomous vehicles.

Google seems to be working on adding a Spotify extension for its Gemini AI assistant. Code findings by Android Authority indicate Gemini could eventually connect to the popular music streaming service. This follows Google's efforts last year to let the AI assistant integrate with other Google apps and services through AI extensions.

According to TSMC CEO C.C. Wei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's proposal to build around three dozen chip fabrication plants (fabs) for AI chips was considered "too aggressive" for the semiconductor manufacturing giant. Last year, Altman reportedly pitched the idea to meet the surging demand for AI services.

Intel was the world's largest chipmaker until 2017 before being overtaken by rivals in recent years. Now, CEO Pat Gelsinger says Intel wants to regain that leading position: "We want to build everybody's chips, everybody's AI chips. We want them to be built leveraging the U.S. factories," Gelsinger stated.
