OpenAI's AI Safety Researchers Fired for Alleged Leaks

OpenAI has fired two researchers for allegedly leaking confidential information, according to a report from The Information. The dismissals appear to be linked to an internal power struggle.

Details:

  • One of the terminated employees was Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former member of OpenAI's "Superalignment" team focused on advanced AI governance and control.

  • The other was Pavel Izmailov, who worked on AI reasoning and was previously part of the company's safety team.

  • Aschenbrenner is reported to be an ally of OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who was involved in a failed attempt to oust CEO Sam Altman last fall.

It's unclear what specific information the two researchers are accused of leaking, but some speculate it may be related to a major leak around a new research project called Q* that surfaced back in November of last year.

AI RESEARCH

DeepMind's AI-Powered Soccer Bots

Researchers at Google's DeepMind have taken a major step forward in developing advanced robotic skills through the power of AI. By applying reinforcement learning techniques, DeepMind has taught small humanoid robots impressive soccer abilities.

Details:

  • Training occurred in two phases - first mastering basic skills like standing up and scoring goals, then combining these into a single robot that could adapt to different game situations.

  • To bridge the gap between simulation and the real world, the researchers intentionally introduced disturbances and random events into the virtual environment, forcing the agents to learn to handle unexpected situations.

  • In head-to-head experiments, the AI-trained robot outperformed manually programmed rivals across key metrics - running 181% faster, turning 302% faster, standing up 63% faster, and kicking the ball 34% faster.

DeepMind sees this work as an important step towards training general-purpose robots, not just those designed for specific narrow tasks.
