OpenAI Quietly Launches Upgraded GPT-4o Amid Leadership Turmoil
OpenAI has just launched an enhanced version of its GPT-4o model, significantly reducing costs while improving performance.
Details:
The new GPT-4o model cuts operational costs by 50% and offers slight performance improvements over its predecessor.
It is said to perform competitively against other industry leaders, being 'only a tad below Sonnet 3.5,' according to Abacus.ai CEO Bindu Reddy.
The new model, officially named “GPT-4o-2024-08-06”, has not yet appeared in the Chatbot Arena benchmark, leaving some aspects of its capabilities unverified.
OpenAI's update comes as competition from rivals like Meta, Google, and Anthropic intensifies, with each releasing advanced models recently.
Alongside this stealthy release, there is growing speculation about the mysterious "Project Strawberry" and the emergence of an advanced anonymous chatbot on LMSYS Arena. It seems OpenAI might be preparing a major launch soon, as it’s been nearly 17 months since the company released GPT-4, its last major foundation model.

Amazon's $4 Billion AI Investment Under UK Scrutiny
Amazon's significant investment in the AI firm Anthropic has caught the attention of the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Details:
Amazon has invested $4 billion into Anthropic, with an initial $1.25 billion equity stake in September, followed by an additional $2.75 billion finalized earlier this year.
As part of the deal, Anthropic’s AI models will be available on Amazon’s Bedrock platform, which is used for building generative AI applications. Additionally, these models will be trained and deployed on Amazon’s custom AI chips.
The CMA has begun a "Phase 1" investigation to assess whether the Amazon-Anthropic deal constitutes a relevant merger situation that could harm competition in the UK.
It has up to 40 working days to decide if the transaction warrants a more in-depth "Phase 2" investigation.
This is not the only AI-related deal under scrutiny; the CMA is also examining Microsoft's multibillion-dollar partnership and investment in OpenAI.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app experienced its highest revenue month to date, following the May launch of the GPT-4o “omni” model. In July, the app achieved a remarkable $28 million in net revenue from the App Store and Google Play, as reported by app intelligence firm Appfigures.
Humane’s AI Pin, launched at $699 in April, has generated over $9 million in lifetime sales. However, internal data reveals approximately 1,000 pre-shipping cancellations and returns totaling more than $1 million, indicating daily returns are now surpassing new sales.
Reddit users will soon see AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. CEO Steve Huffman announced during an earnings call that this initiative aims to "summarize and recommend content," enabling users to "dive deeper" into discussions and discover new communities.
YouTube is testing a new feature, Brainstorm with Gemini, which integrates Google Gemini to assist creators in brainstorming video ideas, titles, and thumbnails. The company announced the launch of the new feature in a video posted to its Creator Insider channel.
