OpenAI Delays ChatGPT 'Voice Mode' Citing Safety Reasons
In May, OpenAI showcased its highly anticipated 'advanced voice mode' for ChatGPT, promising an eerily realistic, nearly real-time voice interaction that would roll out to paying users 'within weeks.' However, the rollout has been delayed as the company claims it needs more time.
Details:
OpenAI planned to launch the alpha version to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users in late June but has postponed it to July for safety reasons.
The company is enhancing the model's ability to detect and refuse certain content, and it won’t be released until it passes certain internal safety and reliability checks.
The rollout will be iterative, with all Plus users gaining access in the fall.
The delay in Voice Mode does not impact the rollout of new video and screen-sharing capabilities that were also announced.
This delay has frustrated many of OpenAI’s paying customers, as the company is facing more problems than expected with this feature. One of these issues involves backlash over the default 'Sky' voice, which drew criticism for its similarity to Scarlett Johansson’s voice and led the actress to threaten legal action against the company.
META
Meta Incorrectly Marks Real Photos as ‘Made by AI’
Meta's recent initiative to label AI-generated content has sparked controversy among photographers. The company’s “Made by AI” label, intended to help users identify AI-manipulated images, is being incorrectly applied to genuine photos, causing frustration and confusion.
Details:
Multiple photographers, including former White House photographer Pete Souza, have reported that Meta incorrectly labeled their real photos as AI-generated.
Meta’s algorithm appears to be triggered by the use of certain editing tools, such as Adobe’s cropping tool and Generative Fill. Even minor edits, like removing a speck from an image, have led to the “Made by AI” label being applied.
The incorrect labels are reportedly visible only on mobile devices and not on the web, adding to the confusion among users
Photographers have voiced their concerns, arguing that minor edits should not result in an AI label. They feel that the label undermines the authenticity of their work.
Meta acknowledges the feedback and is evaluating its approach to ensure the labels accurately reflect the amount of AI used in an image. The label was intended to identify AI images made with tools from Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock.

YouTube is negotiating with record labels to license their music for AI tools that replicate popular artists' songs. The platform aims to secure legal access to content needed for training AI song generators, offering upfront payments to labels like Sony, Warner, and Universal.
According to OpenAI, it simplifies the integration of personal data and programs into ChatGPT workflows. The app is likely part of OpenAI's plan to integrate AI deeper into the operating system.
