OpenAI's Former Chief Scientist is Starting a New AI Company

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, has launched Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a new company focused solely on developing safe superintelligent AI.

Details:

• Sutskever has teamed up with investor Daniel Gross, a former AI lead at Apple, and former OpenAI engineer Daniel Levy.

• The company plans to assemble a "lean, crack team" of the world’s best engineers and researchers to tackle SSI's sole focus: achieving safe superintelligence.

• Sutskever left OpenAI in May 2024 after nearly ten years, following clashes with CEO Sam Altman, and many AI safety researchers left with him. After Sutskever's departure, Altman disbanded the superintelligent AI safety team that Sutskever had led.

• Sutskever has stated that SSI’s first product will be safe superintelligence, and the company "will not do anything else until then."

In a blog post published in 2023, Sutskever predicted that this powerful AI could arrive within a decade, but perhaps he believes that this new hyper-focused project, "insulated from short-term commercial pressures," can reach its goal much sooner.

Forbes Threatens Legal Action Against Perplexity

Forbes has issued a warning to AI search startup Perplexity, accusing the company of copyright infringement.

Details:

• Forbes sent a legal letter to Perplexity's CEO, accusing them of willful infringement of Forbes' copyrights by allegedly stealing text and images.

• The chatbot summarized Forbes content, presented it without proper attribution, then published an AI-generated podcast about the story, which was subsequently turned into a YouTube video.

• Perplexity's CEO defended the company, claiming that the incident was part of a new product feature with 'rough edges' that's being improved.

• Forbes is demanding the removal of content, reimbursement of ad revenues, and 'satisfactory evidence and written assurances' that the infringing articles have been removed.

Tensions between AI and media companies are still escalating with no end in sight.
