OpenAI Signs Content Deals with The Atlantic and Vox Media 🤝

OpenAI continues to establish partnerships with media companies, securing access to their content for training its AI models and avoiding potential lawsuits.

Details:

• Two more major publishers, Vox Media and The Atlantic, announced licensing agreements with OpenAI on Wednesday.

• Vox Media's deal covers content from The Verge, Vox, New York Magazine, Eater, SBNation, and their archives.

• The Atlantic will get attribution links when it’s cited and will use the partnership to create "Atlantic Labs" for experimenting with AI tools for journalism.

• Vox Media plans to use OpenAI tech to enhance its affiliate commerce product, The Strategist Gift Scout, and expand its ad platform, Forte.

• Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed by either company.

Securing licensed data has become crucial for tech companies, and these two additions expand OpenAI’s extensive list of news partnerships, which includes News Corp, Axel Springer, and The Financial Times, among others.

AI Brain Implant Helps Stroke Survivor Speak Spanish, English

Researchers have successfully enabled a stroke survivor who is paralyzed and unable to speak to communicate in both English and Spanish using a brain implant powered by AI.

Details:

• The implant utilizes neural networks to decode the patient's brain activity and translate it into words and sentences displayed on a screen.

• After initially restoring English communication, the team trained the AI system to also decode the distinct brain patterns for Spanish.

• The bilingual patient, identified as "Pancho," can now effortlessly switch between the two languages during conversations after suffering a seizure at age 20 that left him severely paralyzed and unable to articulate words.

While only involving one patient currently, the approach shows "potential to restore more natural communication" among bilingual speakers with paralysis, the researchers said.
