AI RESEARCH

AI Discovers First New Antibiotic in Over 60 Years

Source: Euronews

Researchers at MIT have used AI models to discover the first new class of antibiotics in over 60 years. This breakthrough could help combat drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA that are difficult to treat with current antibiotics.

Key details:

  • Models were trained on data from 39,000 compounds to predict antibiotic activity and toxicity, with the goal of identifying compounds that effectively combat microbes while minimizing harm to the human body

  • AI models screened 12 million compounds and identified promising antibiotic candidates.

  • Out of those candidates, two compounds were found to be effective in treating MRSA infections in mouse models.

The new antibiotic compounds require further testing, but represent a major milestone in the fight against antibiotic resistance. The ability of AI models to rapidly screen millions of candidates and identify those most likely to kill drug-resistant bacteria could transform and accelerate the drug discovery process.

Sony could use predictive AI on the PS6 to enhance the gaming experience.

A newly discovered Sony patent hints their next-gen PlayStation console could get smarter, literally. The patent outlines predictive AI tech that studies gameplay to provide real-time tips. This “predictive assistance” would monitor patterns and then react to help players when needed. To enable such features, Sony may add a dedicated AI processor, like an NPU, to handle complex neural net computing. While still rumors, it signals Sony's interest in making games more intuitive. If AI unlocks new engagement, it could give Sony an edge over Xbox.
