Mistral Confirms 'Leak' of New Open Source AI Model ‘Miqu’ 💥
Source: Mistral
Last weekend, an anonymous user posted files for a new open-source AI model dubbed "miqu-1-70b" to code-sharing platform HuggingFace. Benchmark tests indicate this model approaches the performance of GPT-4, the current state-of-the-art in large language models.
The leaks were confirmed by the Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch today.
Mistral has reportedly continued training an updated version which has already surpassed the leaked model. This leads to speculation that their latest model may match or even beat GPT-4, which has been dominating benchmarks since its release.
If Mistral has achieved parity with GPT-4, this marks a significant milestone for open-source AI. The release of an open-source GPT-4 class model, which would presumably be functionally free to use could place pressure on OpenAI while empowering innovation.
Google's Pixel 8 Gets New “Circle to Search” Feature
Google is bringing some exciting AI capabilities to Pixel 8 devices. The new "Circle to Search" feature lets you easily search and get info on things you see in apps without leaving what you're doing.
Details:
You can now search anything with a simple gesture — like circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping — without switching apps.
The AI generates on-the-fly searches and info cards within whatever app you're using. So you can quickly get context without disrupting your workflow.
It can be great for looking up memes and trends you see on social media. Just grab the image and add a text prompt like "why is this popular right now?"
The feature began rolling out to some Pixel 8 users yesterday, before Google's announcement. Now, it's officially available.

Since being posted, the clip has already drawn over 39 million views.
The FCC proposes outlawing AI robocalls
Source: FCC
The FCC aims to outlaw robocalls that use AI to mimic human voices. Their proposal responds to a recent politically-aimed robocall that cloned President Biden's voice to deter voting. By implementing this proposal, the FCC will provide state attorneys general with added resources to pursue those responsible for malicious robocalls and enforce legal consequences.
GPT-4 poses "mild" biosecurity risk, OpenAI determines
OpenAI has created a "blueprint" for evaluating whether large language models could help bad actors generate hazardous biological agents. Using this methodology, OpenAI determined that GPT-4 has a low potential to aid bioweapon creation. The blueprint provides an early framework to promote biosecurity as cutting-edge AI becomes more powerful.
