MICROSOFT

Microsoft introduces AI-focused Copilot+ PCs 🖥️

At its Microsoft Surface event, the company just announced a new category of AI-powered personal computers called "Copilot+ PCs." Microsoft believes faster AI assistants that run directly on a PC will be "the most compelling reason to upgrade your PC in a long time."

Details:

  • The Copilot+ PC devices are the result of Microsoft's collaboration with major PC manufacturers like Lenovo, Asus, Dell, and others. They feature specialized AI chips and Neural Processing Units designed to support new AI features.

  • A standout feature is "Recall," which continuously tracks and logs everything you do, from web browsing to voice chats. The new tool runs locally on your device and enables you to search for and retrieve the content you’ve interacted with.

  • Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot is being deeply integrated into Windows 11, providing intelligent suggestions within Settings, File Explorer, and even responding to notifications you receive.

  • Copilot+ PCs start at $999 and will be available starting June 18, 2024. Microsoft expects a remarkable 50 million units to sell within the first year.

As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated, Copilot+ PCs represent "bringing the AI wave to PCs," and will surely put pressure on Apple, which is also gearing up to make major AI announcements at its own event.

OpenAI is facing allegations from actress Scarlett Johansson that they used her voice as the basis for their ChatGPT AI's speaking capabilities without her consent.

Details:

  • Johansson claims OpenAI requested her to voice the current ChatGPT system last September, which she declined. She says Altman contacted her agent just two days before the company first demoed the ChatGPT voice, asking for her to reconsider.

  • OpenAI subsequently released a ChatGPT voice dubbed "Sky" with an unmistakable resemblance to Johansson's voice.

  • The actress states she is "angered and in disbelief" over the similarities, and she claims she’s looking for “resolution in the form of transparency.” She has asked OpenAI to “detail the exact process by which they created” the voice.

  • OpenAI has denied cloning Johansson's voice, stating Sky was voiced by an anonymous professional actor and that it was never meant to sound like Johansson.

  • Amid the controversy, OpenAI has temporarily suspended the use of the Sky voice in ChatGPT.

For now, OpenAI is still “in conversations” with Johansson’s representatives to resolve this situation. You can read Scarlett Johansson’s full statement here.
