Microsoft Declares OpenAI a Competitor in AI and Search 👀
Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI has taken a new turn. Microsoft has officially added OpenAI to its list of competitors. This comes shortly after OpenAI announced a new search engine prototype.
Details:
Microsoft identified OpenAI as a competitor in AI offerings and in search and news advertising in the company’s latest annual report. This list has for years included companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta.
Microsoft has invested around $13 billion in OpenAI, making it the startup's largest investor.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that competition has always been a part of their partnership and that the relationship remains strong.
Still, it seems the relationship between the two companies will continue to evolve as both explore overlapping territories.

AI REGULATION
European AI Act Comes Into Force
The European Union’s AI Act has officially come into effect as of August 1, 2024. This regulation introduces a risk-based framework for AI applications to ensure transparency, accountability, and safety across the bloc.
Details:
The AI Act includes several compliance deadlines, with the first major one being six months from now. This deadline will enforce bans on certain uses of AI, such as remote biometric identification in public spaces by law enforcement.
AI applications are classified into three tiers: low/no-risk (exempt from the regulation), high-risk (subject to stringent compliance measures including pre-market conformity assessments and potential audits), and limited risk (requiring transparency measures to ensure users are not deceived).
Violations will incur fines based on the severity of the breach: up to 7% of global annual turnover for banned applications, 3% for other obligations, and 1.5% for providing incorrect information to regulators.
Some specifics are still being finalized, and it will be some time before the more substantive rules take effect, with most of the Act not taking effect for another two years. For more detailed information, you can visit the post on the EU’s official website.
