OpenAI's New Safety Measures for the Election Season

As the 2024 US elections approach, OpenAI is implementing measures to reduce potential misuse of its AI technology. With advanced generative models capable of creating persuasive content, the company aims to increase transparency and guard against manipulation.

New safety measures:

  • DALL-E 3 images will soon have invisible watermarks tracing content back to OpenAI systems. A new tool to recognize DALL-E-generated images is also in development.

  • ChatGPT will cite news sources and link out more frequently to allow users to verify the information. Direct usage for political campaigning or lobbying is now prohibited. Impersonating real candidates is also banned.

  • ChatGPT will direct users to official election information sites when asked relevant questions, in collaboration with the National Association of Secretaries of State.

  • The GPT Store provides a reporting tool for inappropriate bot content.

The efforts are commendable, but it remains to be seen whether these measures will be enough to combat misinformation; it will most likely be up to each individual to critically assess the information they encounter and make informed decisions.
