Microsoft Sneaks into iPhones and Macs with Copilot 🤖

Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot arrived on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, posing new competition for Apple in artificial intelligence just as rumors build around Apple's own AI plans.

Details:

  • Copilot is fully-featured yet FREE, unlike many Apple tools. It is a comprehensive AI assistant that grants access to the powerful GPT-4 (for which users have to pay to access via ChatGPT). Additionally, it can generate images by leveraging DALL-E 3 and boasts numerous other AI-powered features.

  • Meanwhile, Apple applies AI across devices and services but lacks showcase features like text and image generation

  • Rumors suggest Apple has big AI plans, with iOS 18 expected to deeply integrate AI under the nickname "AppleGPT," but details remain uncertain

The AI race is accelerating fast, and consumers expect integration into everyday tasks. Microsoft Copilot sets the pace on Apple devices for now as we await Apple's next move in this pivotal emerging technology space.

Researchers at Stanford University have developed an artificial intelligence system that can identify the geolocation of personal photographs with a high degree of accuracy. This AI, dubbed PIGEON, was trained on over 500,000 Google Street View images to recognize locations across the globe. Key capabilities of this system include:

  • Correctly guessing the country of origin 95% of the time

  • Typically narrowing down the location to within 25 miles

  • Outperforming top human geo-guessers in head-to-head matchups

  • Detecting subtle visual cues that even humans would miss

Potential applications could include surveying infrastructure conditions, monitoring wildlife habitats, or enhancing navigation services. However, privacy advocates have raised concerns about how this technology could enable tracking of individuals without consent. Given the accuracy displayed by PIGEON, even photos posted online could reveal more location data than users realize.
