Microsoft and Apple Withdraw from OpenAI Board Amid Regulatory Scrutiny 🤯

Microsoft and Apple have decided to give up their positions on OpenAI’s board. This move comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny concerning their partnerships and investments.

Details:

  • Microsoft has stepped down from its observer seat on OpenAI’s board, a position it held for less than eight months.

  • Apple was planning to join OpenAI’s nonprofit board, it has now decided against this move.

  • OpenAI confirmed Microsoft's departure and expressed gratitude for their partnership, affirming a continued collaboration under a new approach led by CFO Sarah Friar.

  • The changes are influenced by growing antitrust concerns, with UK, EU, and FTC regulators scrutinizing the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership and other Big Tech AI deals.

  • Despite stepping down, Microsoft remains a significant investor in OpenAI with over $10 billion invested, and will continue to be the exclusive cloud partner.

They are not the only tech giants being investigated, the FTC is also investigating Amazon, and Google investments into OpenAI and Anthropic.

AI RESEARCH

The Influence of Generative AI in Science

Generative AI, particularly ChatGPT, is becoming a significant part of the scientific community. A recent global survey conducted by Elsevier highlights the widespread adoption and mixed feelings among researchers and clinicians regarding AI's role in science.

Details:

  • 96% of the 2,999 respondents have heard of AI, with over half (54%) having used it. Nearly a third (31%) use AI in their professional work.

  • ChatGPT is the most recognized AI tool, with 89% awareness and a quarter of respondents using it professionally. Other tools like Bard and Bing Chat have significantly lower awareness rates (40% and 39%, respectively).

  • A majority (72%) believe AI will have a transformative or significant impact on their field. Almost all respondents expect AI to accelerate knowledge discovery (95%) and increase research output (94%).

  • Despite the optimism, 94% fear AI could be used for disinformation, 86% worry about critical errors, and 81% think AI might impair critical thinking.

The survey underscores the dual-edged nature of AI in science. While its potential to revolutionize research is widely acknowledged, significant concerns about its misuse and reliability persist.
