MICROSOFT
Microsoft Aims to Create AI-powered Newsrooms 📰
Source: Microsoft
Microsoft is partnering with Semafor, along with several other news organizations, to develop responsible practices for AI-assisted journalism.
Details:
Through collaborations with Semafor, Microsoft will provide tools to help journalists utilize AI capabilities to aid in the creation of news stories
All stories will be written entirely by journalists, with the AI assisting in research, source discovery, translation, and more.
Microsoft also announced collaborations with other news organizations like the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and the GroundTruth Project to explore ways to incorporate generative AI into their work and newsrooms.
The use of AI chatbots has been controversial in newsrooms because the information they provide is not always reliable. Microsoft claims that its goal is for AI to support journalists, not replace them.
META
Meta to Start Labeling AI-Generated Images
Meta is implementing new policies around AI-generated images. The company recently announced that it will start labeling AI images across its platforms - Instagram, Facebook, and Threads - over the coming months.
Details:
Meta will label images created by external AI services like DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Alphabet's Google. Content generated by Meta's own AI tools is already labeled.
Meta claims the industry is currently lacking in the development of standards to identify AI-generated videos and audio.
That is why users will be required to label their own altered video/audio content made using AI, and penalties will be applied if they fail to do so.
As Meta gears up for the upcoming global elections, these new labeling and disclosure policies aim to make AI content more transparent. We'll have to wait and see how well they work.
AI RESEARCH
PokéLLMon: The AI battling human Pokémon players
Source: Georgia Institute of Technology
A new AI agent named PokéLLMon demonstrates the ability to compete against human players in Pokémon battles. Developed by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, who see this project as a testing ground for developing agents capable of emulating human behavior in virtual worlds.
Details:
PokéLLMon utilizes large language models, Pokédex data, and reinforcement learning to develop Pokémon battle strategies.
In online competitions, PokéLLMon achieved a 49% win rate in ladder battles and 56% in one-on-one matches against humans.
The AI agent has some weaknesses: It exhibits vulnerabilities in long-term strategies and can be outwitted by experienced players employing deceptive maneuvers.
While comparable to average players, PokéLLMon still falls short against good experienced players.
While researchers continue to work on its weaknesses, PokéLLMon's current abilities demonstrate how AI can rival humans even in complex gaming environments.
