META

Meta Will Keep Its Multimodal AI Models Out of Europe 🚨

Meta announced it will not release its upcoming multimodal AI model, Llama, or any future models in the European Union because of "a lack of clarity from regulators."

Details:

  • These multimodal models are planned for integration into various products, including smartphones and Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.

  • Meta's decision means European companies and customers cannot use these models, even under open licenses, potentially limiting offerings from outside the EU as well.

  • Meta's issue lies in how it can train models using data from European customers while complying with GDPR, the EU's existing data protection law. The company considers the use of this data as essential for delivering high-quality products.

  • Despite similar regulations, Meta plans to launch its new model in the UK, where it faces less regulatory uncertainty.

This move highlights the increasing friction between tech companies and European regulators.

  • The startup secured backing from major investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Radical Ventures.

  • It is developing models that understand the three-dimensional physical world, focusing on spatial intelligence to enhance fields like robotics, augmented reality, and virtual reality.
