Meta Wants to Stop OpenAI from Becoming a For-Profit Company 🤯
Mark Zuckerberg and Meta have joined Elon Musk in a legal battle against OpenAI. The tech giants are questioning the ethics and legality of OpenAI’s transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit company.
Details:
Meta has filed a letter with California’s Attorney General, urging action to prevent OpenAI's planned conversion to a nonprofit.
Meta argues that OpenAI "should not be allowed to flout the law by taking and reappropriating assets it built as a charity and using them for potentially enormous private gains."
The company warns that OpenAI's actions could set a bad precedent, with “seismic effects” on Silicon Valley, encouraging investors to launch nonprofits, collect tax-free donations, and later shift to for-profit once the technology becomes viable.
This alliance is somewhat unexpected, as Zuckerberg and Musk have had a series of clashes in the past. However, with Meta's aim to have the most used AI assistant in the world and build AI superintelligence, hindering OpenAI’s shift to for-profit status could serve their competitive interests.

OpenAI to Elon Musk: 'You Can’t Sue Your Way to AGI'
In a recent blog post, OpenAI released text messages and internal details about Musk’s involvement with the company, countering his legal claims.
Details:
The new messages reveal that Elon Musk was the one pushing to transition OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit model in 2017. He allegedly stated that while a non-profit was the right structure early on, it “may not be the right one now.”
The blog also highlights Musk’s attempts to become CEO and gain majority control of OpenAI. He proposed merging OpenAI with Tesla, but when the co-founders rejected the idea due to fears of a power struggle, Musk resigned from the company.
Following his departure, Musk founded xAI, now a competitor to OpenAI.
While the blog post briefly acknowledges Musk's early contributions to the startup, it essentially accuses him of trying to rewrite history and challenges him to compete in the marketplace rather than the courtroom.
