INTEL x TSMC

Intel and TSMC Agree to Form Chipmaking Joint Venture

The two firms have reportedly reached a tentative agreement to form a joint venture that will operate the U.S. chipmaker's factories.

Details:

  • The U.S. government had urged the two companies to find a solution to Intel's long-running crisis, as the company recently reported a net loss of $18.8 billion for 2024.

  • TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, will take a 20% stake in the new company, and Intel and the other investors would control the rest.

  • It is reported that TSMC does not plan to invest capital for its 20% stake. Instead, it will contribute expertise by sharing its chip production methods and mentoring Intel's manufacturing teams.

By teaming up with TSMC, Intel is gaining support from one of its biggest competitors as it continues to struggle with intense competition and the industry's shift toward artificial intelligenceā€”a market where it has little presence.

MIDJOURNEY

Midjourney Launches Its New V7 AI Image Model

Midjourney has launched V7, its first new AI image generation model in nearly a year. They described it as their ā€œsmartest, most beautiful, most coherent model yet,ā€ which brings several enhancements:

  • V7 is Midjourneyā€™s first model to have personalization switched on by default.

  • To use it, users will first have to rate around 200 images to build a Midjourney "personalization" profile, which tunes the model to their individual visual preferences.

  • The new model offers higher image quality with improved textures and more coherent representations of bodies, hands, and objects. It is also ā€œmuch smarter with text prompts,ā€ resulting in more accurate image generation.

  • V7 is available in two versions: Turbo (more expensive to run) and Relax, and powers a new tool called Draft Mode, which renders images at 10x the speed and half the cost of the standard mode, but with lower quality (though they can be enhanced and re-rendered with a click).

Some standard Midjourney features, such as image upscaling and retexturing, won't be available for V7 yet but are expected to arrive in the coming months, along with completely new features.

Meet your younger self through AI video

Pika has recently introduced a new feature called "Selfie With Your Younger Self" that allows users to create side-by-side selfies with their younger version.

  1. Go to the Pika AI website and sign in.

  2. Select the ā€œSelfie with Your Younger Selfā€ feature.

  3. Upload a video of yourself and let the AI process a frame where it leaves enough space for your younger self.

  4. Then either upload a childhood picture or let the AI generate one.

  5. Click ā€œGenerateā€

Tips:

  • The process works best if there is nothing else in the photo.

  • Try not to take up the entire space in the video frame, or your younger self might get cut off.

  • You can also get creative with the feature. Instead of using a photo of your younger self, you can add pictures of other people, like a friend or family member, or even use characters from cartoons or anime.

*Note: Free users may experience longer wait times to receive their videos.

ChatGPT's new image generation feature has seen rapid adoption, with users creating over 700 million images in about a week. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap shared that over 130 million users tried the function in its first week, with India being a key growth driver.

CEO Sam Altman also teased that an improved version, ā€œV2,ā€ is in the works.

Sources claim that Microsoft has delayed or slowed data center projects in Indonesia, the UK, Australia, Illinois, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. However, a Microsoft representative told Bloomberg that the company still intends to maintain its $80 billion data center spending budget for the 2025 fiscal year.

The feature will help users recall plot points and character arcs before starting the latest book in a series. Amazon plans to add the recaps feature to the Kindle app for iOS soon.

The company has developed a platform that can automatically test a model across thousands of benchmarks and tasks, identify weaknesses, and flag additional training data that could help improve its performance.
