Grok 3 Faces Backlash Over Brief Censorship of Trump and Musk Mentions

Elon Musk’s AI model, Grok 3, has stirred up controversy after briefly censoring unflattering mentions of both Musk and President Donald Trump.

Details:

• Last week, several users found that Grok gave some extreme and controversial responses when asked about President Trump and Elon Musk, prompting xAI engineers to announce that they were “working to fix this immediately.”

• A few days later, users noticed that when asked controversial questions, Grok 3 avoided mentioning Donald Trump and Elon Musk and found it had been instructed to omit them.

• xAI’s head of engineering, Igor Babuschkin, revealed that the person responsible for pushing the unapproved prompt change was an ex-OpenAI employee who hadn't "fully absorbed xAI's culture yet."

When Musk announced Grok roughly two years ago, he pitched the model as edgy and unfiltered—a “maximally truth-seeking” AI willing to answer controversial questions that other AI systems wouldn’t, a stance that seems to have backfired in this case. Despite Grok’s great capabilities, it seems there is still much work to do.
