GPT-4V Triumphs Over 'Fake' Google Gemini Demo✨
Last week, Google's highly-anticipated AI offering, Gemini, faced heavy criticism when it was revealed that the spectacular demo was largely fabricated. Amid this controversy, tech content creator Greg Sadetsky released a video recreating parts of the polarizing Gemini demo using GPT-4V in real-time, without resorting to the editing trickery used to polish Google's video.
GPT-4 demonstrated remarkable responsiveness in a back-and-forth interaction, accurately recognizing Sadetsky's drawings, hand signs/gestures, and even detecting the game of "rock, paper, scissors" being played.
Sadetsky published the GPT-4 code and acknowledged that his remake wasn't as polished as Google's production. However, it showcased that GPT-4V could easily perform the tasks claimed by Gemini.
Gemini Ultra, set for release next year, is poised as a noteworthy advancement, aiming to match or exceed its competitor, GPT-4. However, the fake demo has given it a rocky start, with people now highly skeptical about its capabilities.

Is ChatGPT's Recent Laziness Due to Winter Break?

In late November, ChatGPT users started noticing some odd behavior - the AI assistant was refusing certain tasks and giving simplified responses. Almost like it was being "lazy." OpenAI confirmed it's an issue but hasn't explained why. Now, some researchers are taking seriously what's being called the "winter break hypothesis."
Details:
On Friday, an AI researcher openly wondered if ChatGPT was simulating seasonal depression. Another noted the bot gets fed the current date - what if it learned people slow work in December? The winter break hypothesis was born.
Over the weekend, a developer named Rob Lynch tested GPT-4's API in May vs December and found shorter outputs for December.

However, another AI researcher, Ian Arawjo, stated that he was unable to replicate Lynch's findings with statistical significance. Additional tests are being conducted by others, and results so far remain inconclusive."
Whether or not winter break is the cause, this episode gives a glimpse into the quickly changing world of large language models. Even such an odd theory is hard to rule out.
