AI Protein-Prediction Tool AlphaFold3 is Now Open Source 🧬

The announcement comes shortly after AlphaFold's creators, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper, received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their pioneering work.

Details:

  • Google DeepMind has released the source code and model weights of AlphaFold 3 for non-commercial applications, reversing its earlier restrictive approach after facing criticism in May for withholding the code and offering limited access through a web interface.

  • Unlike its predecessor, AlphaFold 3 not only predicts protein structures but also models how these proteins interact with DNA, RNA, and small molecules.

  • Several companies, including Baidu, ByteDance, Chai Discovery, and Ligo Biosciences, have already developed their own versions of AlphaFold3-inspired tools.

AlphaFold 3 marks a major leap in AI-driven science, with its impact extending beyond drug discovery and molecular biology as researchers apply this tool to various challenges. With its global use, we may see faster progress in understanding and treating diseases than ever before.

X Tests Free Access to AI Chatbot Grok

X, formerly known as Twitter, is testing a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok, developed by Elon Musk's company xAI.

Details:

  • X is testing Grok's availability for free users in New Zealand. Users can make 10 queries every two hours with the Grok-2 model and 20 queries with the Grok-2 mini model. Additionally, they can ask three image analysis questions per day.

  • To access Grok for free, users must have an account that is at least seven days old and linked to a phone number.

  • Launched in August, Grok-2 includes image generation capabilities and can understand images, thanks to Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model. These features were exclusive to premium users until now.

By opening Grok to free users, xAI aims to expand its user base and gather feedback more quickly, enhancing its competitive edge against other AI models like ChatGPT and Claude.
