Google's New AI Video Generator: 'Lumiere'

Google has unveiled Lumiere, a groundbreaking addition to the AI video landscape. This tool can transform text and images into strikingly realistic videos.

Lumiere demonstrates a multitude of functionalities:

  • Generating stylized video - Applying artistic styles like Origami or pixel art to real-world footage

  • Cinemagraphs - Animate the content of an image within a specific user-provided region.

  • Video Inpainting - Generating missing sections of a video

  • Editing video in real-time - Changing textures, outfits, and more dynamically

Lumiere represents a significant breakthrough with its innovative approach to generating entire video frames at once. This marks a departure from the older methods of piecing together individual frames, resulting in smoother and more natural motion.

While not yet accessible to the public, Google has published extensive technical details on GitHub.

The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot launched today, led by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with other government agencies and private sector partners. The goal is to create a national infrastructure to support AI research and innovation and maintain U.S. leadership in AI by making critical resources accessible to more researchers and students nationwide.

Details:

  • Over 10 federal agencies and 25 private companies and nonprofits have come together for this initiative

  • Provides researchers and educators access to computing resources, datasets, models, software, training

  • Partners include Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI

  • Aims to foster public-private partnerships across industry and government

Researchers can currently apply for access at nairrpilot.org. Only 25 to 50 proposals will likely be accepted in this initial pilot period, with hundreds more spots opening up in the spring.

AI RESEARCH

Meta's New Self-Improving AI Models

Source: Meta

Meta and researchers from New York University have introduced a new concept for language models "Self-Rewarding Language Models." These models can improve their abilities without any human feedback or supervision.

Details:

  • These models generate their own internal rewards during training to continuously enhance their performance

  • Removes human performance level as a potential bottleneck to model improvement

  • Initial experiments show a self-rewarding Llama 2 model outperforming models like GPT-4

This could potentially enable models to surpass levels achievable through human feedback alone and continue self-improving indefinitely. While the initial results appear promising, further research is necessary to assess real-world performance and vulnerability to 'reward hacking'.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently discussed the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) on the podcast "Leading." Gates emphasized that the key to AI's safety lies in ensuring that the "good guys" have superior AI technology compared to the "bad guys" with malicious intent. While Gates didn't explicitly name who he considers 'bad guys,' he hopes for global cooperation to responsibly harness the power of AI.
