Former OpenAI Researcher Says the Company Broke Copyright Law 🀯

A former researcher at OpenAI, Suchir Balaji, has voiced concerns about the company's use of copyrighted data. Balaji, who worked at OpenAI for nearly four years, believes the company's practices may have violated copyright laws, putting the focus once again on the ethical and legal implications of AI development.

Details:

  • Suchir Balaji helped gather internet data for projects like ChatGPT. Initially, he assumed the company was legally entitled to use this data, but later questioned the legality of using copyrighted material without explicit permission.

  • Balaji believes these technologies could harm the internet ecosystem by undermining the commercial viability of original content creators.

  • He is not alone in his concerns. Other former employees from AI companies have raised similar issues, and several lawsuits have been filed against AI firms, including OpenAI, by various stakeholders like artists and news organizations.

OpenAI asserts its data use falls under the 'fair use' doctrine, claiming its AI models transform data without competing with original works. Balaji and others argue that outdated copyright laws can't handle AI complexities and call for new regulations.
