Mira Murati Is Launching Her Own AI Startup, Thinking Machines Lab

After her unexpected departure from OpenAI last fall, former CTO Mira Murati has re-entered the spotlight with a new venture, Thinking Machines Lab, which plans to focus on building “multimodal” systems that “work with people collaboratively.”

Details:

• The startup intends to build tooling to “make AI work for [people’s] unique needs and goals,” and to create AI systems that are “more widely understood, customizable, and generally capable” than those currently available.

• In a blog post, the company emphasized its belief in “open collaboration,” claiming it plans to regularly publish technical blog posts, scientific papers, and code.

• Murati has brought together some of the industry's top talent, including OpenAI co-founder John Schulman, former OpenAI CTO Barrett Zoph, and other top engineers from elite AI labs like Google DeepMind and Character AI, with more OpenAI employees expected to join the company soon.

Murati brings more than six years of experience from OpenAI, where she played a key role in developing ChatGPT. With such a strong team and clear focus, her new venture is already drawing attention as a potential major player in the AI space.

OpenAI Considers New Powers to Block Elon Musk's Takeover

OpenAI is reportedly considering giving its nonprofit board special voting rights to prevent a hostile takeover from Elon Musk.

Details:

• The new rights would allow the board to overrule major investors, preserving some of its powers after OpenAI completes its transition to a for-profit structure.

• Unlike a for-profit board, OpenAI’s nonprofit board has no fiduciary responsibility to take the best price, as its duty is to uphold OpenAI’s charter and mission to ensure AGI benefits humanity. This makes it easier to reject offers they believe wouldn't serve the company’s goals.

• Last week, a group of investors led by billionaire Elon Musk made a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit. While the board unanimously rejected the offer, the move could still disrupt OpenAI’s plans.

OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit before converting to a “capped-profit” structure in 2019. The company is now undergoing a rocky restructuring process once again, this time to become a public benefit corporation, aiming to complete the transition by late 2026.
