Figure released an intriguing one-minute video over the weekend. It shows Figure-01, their 5-foot-9 robot, performing a new skill: making a cup of coffee in an office breakroom. While simple for humans, it's an impressive demonstration of Figure's autonomous AI learning capabilities.

Details:

  • In the video, Figure-01 responds to a verbal request to make coffee by inserting a K-cup in the coffee chamber and starting the machine.

  • The bot learned the coffee-making process after observing humans demonstrate it for approximately 10 hours. It initially made mistakes placing the cup, but its AI allowed it to self-correct.

  • Figure says Figure-01's behaviors are fully autonomous, not teleoperated. As senior AI engineer Corey Lynch put it, “It’s end-to-end AI.”

Figure ultimately aims to introduce these humanoids robots in workplaces for corporate tasks, filling labor shortages, and performing unsafe tasks.

OpenAI states that the New York Times' prompting approach breaches its service terms.

OpenAI claims the New York Times violated its terms of service by deliberately using manipulative prompts to reproduce the AI model's training data. The Times prompted GPT models with the beginnings of original articles, causing them to generate nearly identical copies. OpenAI says this prompting strategy intentionally exploits the model to recreate copyrighted content, which goes against intended use.

China announces new guidelines for generative AI in science

China has issued strict new rules on how researchers can use generative AI tools like ChatGPT, aiming to promote transparency and address issues like authorship. The guidelines from the Ministry of Science and Technology state that AI systems cannot be credited as co-authors and mandate clear labeling of any AI-generated text. With rapid AI advances causing “profound changes” in research, China wants to promote ethics, safety, and transparency.
