Elon Musk Raises $6 Billion, Plans To Build Supercomputer For xAI Startup 💥

Elon Musk's xAI has secured $6 billion in funding, intensifying the race for AGI against rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Details:

  • $6 billion was raised from prominent investors including Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and more.

  • The funding will be used to accelerate the development of xAI's Grok chatbot. The company is expected to release a new version this month, Grok 2.0, with capabilities surpassing those of GPT-4.

  • It will also help Elon Musk with his plans to build a massive supercomputer, dubbed the "Gigafactory of Compute," by Fall 2025.

  • The supercomputer will utilize Nvidia's H100 GPUs and aims to be four times larger than the current biggest GPU clusters that have been built to train and run highly performant AI models.

There have been reports that OpenAI and Microsoft are planning a $100 billion "Stargate" AI supercomputer project. Elon Musk’s supercomputer project would allow him to compete with them in that regard.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Says Stop Treating AI Like Humans

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has voiced concerns over anthropomorphizing artificial intelligence, arguing that AI should be viewed as just a tool.

Details:

  • The comments come days after OpenAI demonstrated its AI's ability to change its voice on demand to sound more emotional.

  • Nadella dislikes describing AI in human terms, 'I don't like anthropomorphizing AI, I sort of believe it's a tool.

  • He regrets the terminology 'artificial intelligence,' wishing it were called 'different intelligence' instead, as AI's capabilities are not comparable to human intelligence.

His comments highlight the differing approaches between Microsoft and OpenAI, despite their close partnership.
