20 Years of Apple vs. Microsoft
Microsoft became the world’s most valuable company in January 2024, after the rival iPhone maker’s shares had a weak start to the year due to growing concerns over demand in China.
Microsoft's shares have been significantly boosted by the company's early lead in generative artificial intelligence, largely due to its early investment in OpenA

NEURALINK

Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company Neuralink reached a major milestone this week. On Sunday, the startup successfully implanted its brain-computer interface chip for the first time in a human patient.
Details:
The implant, inserted by a surgical robot, detects neuron spikes - electrical signals sent between brain cells. Initial results show the chip is accurately picking up these neural signals
This is the first human trial of Neuralink's brain chip and robot surgeon, as the company received FDA approval last year.
The end goal is to connect the human brain directly to computers using tiny implantable threads
Potential applications include helping paralyzed patients move and control devices with their thoughts
There is still a long road of testing and development ahead. However, the early results suggest the startup’s tech works as intended in a human subject.

The AI boom has highlighted Big Tech's reliance on Nvidia for critical computing chips. With demand outpacing supply, tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft have decided to take chip development into their own hands.
Revenue for Nvidia has skyrocketed thanks to surging interest in AI. However, production hasn't kept up, leaving Big Tech thirsty for more chips.
Seeking to mitigate future shortages and reduce costs, these companies are now building custom AI chips. At least four tech giants—Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta—revealed their own AI chips last year, with some still in development.
Additionally, OpenAI's CEO recently met with Samsung and SK Group in South Korea to explore manufacturing partnerships around specialized AI chips.
It's a delicate balancing act - collaboration with Nvidia is still essential, even as they compete directly in the chip space.
By producing their own chips, the tech titans stand to gain increased control, flexibility, and cost efficiencies for their AI initiatives. The race is on to fuel the next generation of artificial intelligence.

China approves over 40 AI models for public use in the past six months
Chinese regulators have approved over 40 artificial intelligence models for public use in the first six months since implementing an approval process, striving to advance AI adoption while maintaining oversight. Last week, authorities granted the latest round of approvals, enabling technology companies like Xiaomi to deploy large language models. The new approvals underscore Beijing's strategic acceleration of AI capabilities to match the U.S., albeit under strict state control.
