Open-Source DeepSeek-R1 challenges OpenAI's o1
Chinese AI lab DeepSeek has just released DeepSeek-R1, a new open-source "reasoning" AI model that outperforms OpenAI's o1 on certain benchmarks.
Details:
DeepSeek's R1 model reportedly beats OpenAI's o1 on benchmarks such as AIME, MATH-500, and SWE-bench Verified. These tests measure reasoning, problem-solving, and programming capabilities.
Released under an MIT license, R1 can be freely used for commercial purposes, unlike the more restricted access to OpenAI's systems.
R1 contains 671 billion parameters, but DeepSeek also offers "distilled" versions, ranging from 1.5 billion to 70 billion parameters, making it accessible even for smaller-scale hardware like laptops.
Notably, DeepSeek's API pricing for R1 is stated to be 90%-95% cheaper than OpenAI's o1.
The release comes amid rising tensions in AI development, with the U.S. proposing stricter export regulations on AI technologies to Chinese companies and OpenAI expressing concerns about China’s rapid progress in AI.

UK's New Supercomputer Is Using AI to Revolutionize Medicine
A £225m supercomputer based in Bristol, UK, is using AI to develop new drugs and vaccines to treat people.

The Isambard-AI computer will be the most powerful supercomputer in the UK and among the "top 10 fastest" supercomputers in the world when it is fully operational this summer.
It is being used to simulate drug interactions at the molecular level, enabling faster and more efficient development of vaccines and treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, melanoma, heart disease, and various types of cancer.
One advantage of government-funded projects like Isambard-AI is that the work is done in the public interest by academics, making it more open compared to work done by private companies.
Beyond medicine, the supercomputer is expected to drive innovation in areas such as infrastructure maintenance and disease diagnosis.
The supercomputer positions the UK as a serious contender in the global AI race, with experts calling it a game-changer for high-performance computing and medical research.
