AI IN THE WORKPLACE

WEF Research Finds Companies Prefer AI Training Over Layoffs

A new study from the World Economic Forum (WEF) reveals a trend: while AI is expected to replace some jobs, companies are focusing more on retraining their workforce than cutting jobs.

Details:

  • The WEF's 'Future of Jobs Report 2025' is based on data from a survey of over 1,000 companies worldwide.

  • While about 41% of companies plan to cut jobs they believe AI could handle, a much larger 77% are focused on training their existing workforce to work with AI systems.

  • High-income countries lead the charge, with 87% of companies emphasizing workforce training, followed closely by middle-income nations.

  • Despite fears of job losses, the WEF predicts a net gain of 78 million jobs globally by 2030, driven by new technologies and market shifts.

  • Tasks requiring physical skills, empathy, or nuanced judgment remain firmly in human hands, underscoring the need for balanced AI integration.

The WEF report paints a hopeful picture of the future workforce, highlighting a global shift toward upskilling employees to work alongside AI.

Google Launches 'Daily Listen' for Personalized Podcast Summaries

Google is testing a new AI-powered feature called "Daily Listen," designed to deliver personalized, bite-sized podcast-style summaries directly in its Discover feed. The feature creates five-minute audio episodes based on topics and stories you follow.

Details:

  • It is currently rolling out on the Google app for Android and iOS and is available only to U.S. users who have opted into the company's Search Labs experiment.

  • The podcast also includes links to related stories that you can click to learn more about the topics.

  • The new feature offers stories based on your interactions with the personalized Discover feed. The topics you follow on Search and Discover in the Google app help create a more personalized experience, Google says.

While the audio summaries are not error-proof, they could be a helpful addition for those looking to stay up to date without needing to read through lengthy feeds.
