Chinese Lab Introduces 'Reasoning' AI Model to Compete with OpenAI's o1

A Chinese AI research company, DeepSeek, has introduced a new AI model named DeepSeek-R1-Lite-Preview, part of a new wave of "reasoning" AI, which aims to improve accuracy by taking more time to "think" and process queries.

Details:

• R1-Lite-Preview employs "chain-of-thought" reasoning, allowing the AI to present its thought process in real time and enabling users to follow the logical steps taken to reach a solution.

• It is on par with OpenAI's O1 on benchmarks like AIME and MATH, positioning itself as a strong contender among the most advanced models in the industry.

• DeepSeek plans to release open-source versions of its R1 series models and related APIs, a move that aligns with the company’s history of supporting the open-source AI community.

The R1-Lite-Preview is now available on DeepSeek Chat at chat.deepseek.com. While users can access it for free, the “Deep Think” mode has a daily limit of 50 messages

Facebook Messenger Gets HD Video Calls and AI Backgrounds

Meta has rolled out new features for its Messenger app:

• HD Video Calls: Messenger now supports HD video calls by default over Wi-Fi, with an option to enable it for cellular calls through the call settings menu.

• Voice Isolation and AI-Powered Noise Suppression: These features can be activated in the call settings.

• Audio and Video Messages: Users can leave audio or video messages when contacts are unavailable, like a digital voicemail.

• Siri Integration: iOS users can now use Siri to send messages and make calls on Messenger.

• AI Backgrounds: Meta has introduced AI-generated backgrounds for video calls, allowing users to customize their call environment by selecting from various effects.

Messenger is one of Meta’s earliest services, and the company hopes these new features will give it an extra boost in the competitive market.
