GLOBAL AI RACE

China Plans AI Academies to Attract Global AI Talent 🌐

China is set to establish AI academies aimed at attracting global talent. This initiative, discussed at a recent meeting of over 100 experts, underscores the country's ambition to lead in AI.

Details:

  • The proposal was made by renowned AI expert Zhu Songchun, who advocated for treating foreign experts and students as Chinese citizens without bias.

  • Zhu also suggested using private foundations for recruitment and expanding AI education for students, integrating it with other disciplines

  • China's Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Long Teng, reiterated the country's commitment to promoting international talent exchanges and establishing standards for recognizing "high-end, cutting-edge and urgently needed" foreign talent.

  • This move comes as China intensifies its AI initiatives amid a technological rivalry with the United States, which has imposed export bans on AI chips and is considering bans on AI models.

As the global race for AI supremacy intensifies, China is taking steps to reach its ambitions, aiming to become the world leader in AI by 2030.

Microsoft Build 2024 Highlights 🦾

With AI taking center stage, Microsoft unveiled a series of innovations aimed at streamlining workflows and enhancing productivity.

Here are the key AI-related announcements from the annual Microsoft Build Conference 2024:

  • AI Agent Assistants: Microsoft introduced Copilot AI agents, virtual employees designed to handle routine tasks such as email monitoring, automated workflows, employee onboarding, and data entry. These AI agents aim to alleviate the burden of mundane tasks, allowing human workers to focus on more critical responsibilities.

  • Multimodal AI for Mobile Devices: The company unveiled Phi-3-vision, a multimodal AI model capable of processing text and images on mobile devices and is compact enough to work on mobile devices. Phi-3-vision is part of Microsoft’s Phi-3 family of models that the company announced back in April.

  • Real-Time Video Translation in Microsoft Edge: Microsoft Edge will soon feature an AI-powered real-time video translation capability, enabling users to watch videos from platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn, Reuters, and Coursera with dubbed translations. It will initially support Spanish, English, German, Hindi, Italian, and Russian. The feature is "coming soon" and additional languages and video platforms will be added in the future.

  • AI-Powered Clipboard features: The PowerToys suite for Windows 11 introduces the Advanced Paste feature, leveraging AI to transform clipboard contents contextually before pasting within any app into various formats such as plaintext, markdown, or JSON. Users can trigger conversions using keyboard shortcuts or by typing prompts, enabling on-the-fly text manipulation and summarization.

Adobe has rolled out two new AI capabilities in Lightroom for enhanced photo editing. The "Generative Remove" feature removes unwanted objects from images, and the "Lens Blur" tool leverages AI to apply realistic blur effects.

Elon Musk's xAI is working on allowing image inputs for its Grok chatbot. Developer documents show progress towards enabling users to upload photos to Grok and receive text responses. Amazon is overhauling its Alexa voice assistant by integrating generative AI capabilities. According to inside sources, the tech giant plans to roll out a more conversational Alexa later this year to rival AI chatbots from Google and OpenAI.
