China Unveils Vidu: A Powerful Text-to-Video Generator

Source: Shengshu Technology

China has unveiled a new text-to-video generator called Vidu, developed by Shengshu Technology and Tsinghua University. The announcement was made at the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing.

Details:

  • Vidu can generate 16-second video clips at 1080p resolution with a single click.

  • It uses a Universal Vision Transformer (U-ViT) architecture to simulate the real physical world with multi-camera view generation.

  • According to the company, Vidu creates videos with complex scenes, realistic lighting, shadows, and detailed facial expressions. It also showcases a rich imagination, generating surreal content with depth and complexity.

  • A side-by-side comparison with OpenAI's Sora reveals that the generated videos are not yet at Sora's level of realism. Additionally, Sora can generate continuous videos of up to one minute.

While the quality of Vidu still seems to lag behind Sora, it demonstrates China’s serious ambitions to catch up with or even surpass leading US companies in the race for generative AI models.
